Short story with great effect: On ethics and science

With „The Breakthrough“, Daphne du Maurier has written a short story with great effect. It is about scientific experiments concerning the afterlife of the human soul. With only a few words she manages to unfold an atmosphere of dark suspense and scary suspicion.

The scientific aspect is well-made: You willingly follow the main character in his doubts, his difficulties to believe, until he sees the result of the experiment (which, lucky reader, exists only in literature!), and the problems to interpret them correctly.

In the end, this short story is about the slippery slope making you go beyond ethical boundaries. You will enjoy it!
